THE STORY
This blue has a name: ishkor. It comes from ash, from earth, from eight centuries of alchemical patience in the kilns of Rishtan.
Rishtan—a small city in the Fergana Valley—has produced Central Asia's most coveted cobalt ceramics since the 9th century. The secret lies in the glaze: ishkor, made from the ash of desert shrubs mixed with ground quartz and cobalt. When fired at extreme temperatures, it yields a blue so luminous it seems lit from within. Chinese potters once traveled the Silk Road seeking the formula. They never found it.
This plate was handcrafted by Usta Ravshan Tojidinov, a master of the geometric tradition. A golden rosette radiates from the center, surrounded by concentric rings of patterns so intricate they require magnification to fully appreciate: pointed stars in turquoise and navy, diamond chains, scrolling spirals, fan-shaped petals at the rim. Each line drawn freehand, no stencils.
The outer border shows where the brush hesitated for a fraction of a second—one triangle slightly wider than its neighbor.

For 35 years, Usta Ravshan has devoted his life to a single, perfect thing: the legendary ishkor glaze of Rishtan. In his workshop in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, he transforms local clay and natural minerals into the brilliant turquoise that has defined Central Asian ceramics for 800 years. Ravshan learned the craft from his father, who learned from his father—an unbroken chain of knowledge spanning generations. But he isn't just preserving the past; he's ensuring its future. In his workshop, he trains apprentices in techniques that must be learned through years of patient practice, not quick tutorials. What sets Ravshan apart is his range: geometric precision in radiating stars and mathematical tessellations, yet also romantic florals and paradise garden motifs. Each piece balances technical perfection with artistic expression—the mark of a true master.
