THE STORY

This plate refuses symmetry. And that refusal is its brilliance.

In traditional Uzbek ceramic design, balance is sacred—patterns repeat, borders mirror, compositions find their center. But occasionally, a master artisan breaks the rule on purpose. This piece divides itself between two worlds: on one side, peacock feathers curve in turquoise teardrops against a cream ground. On the other, a dense mosaic of blue scales marches toward the center.

At the heart, a lobed medallion outlined in burnt orange holds an exuberant garden—florals in coral, lavender, yellow, and pink blooming against a black ground stippled with white dots. Turquoise paisley forms twist through the composition like vines finding light. The deep green scalloped border anchors the entire conversation.

The glaze pooled slightly thicker where the orange meets the black, creating a raised ridge you can feel with your fingertips. One of the peacock teardrops has a tiny imperfection where a dust particle landed before firing.

About the Artisan

Usta Ravshan Tojidinov

Rishtan, Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan
35+ years of mastery

For 35 years, Usta Ravshan has devoted his life to a single, perfect thing: the legendary ishkor glaze of Rishtan. In his workshop in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, he transforms local clay and natural minerals into the brilliant turquoise that has defined Central Asian ceramics for 800 years. Ravshan learned the craft from his father, who learned from his father—an unbroken chain of knowledge spanning generations. But he isn't just preserving the past; he's ensuring its future. In his workshop, he trains apprentices in techniques that must be learned through years of patient practice, not quick tutorials. What sets Ravshan apart is his range: geometric precision in radiating stars and mathematical tessellations, yet also romantic florals and paradise garden motifs. Each piece balances technical perfection with artistic expression—the mark of a true master.

"The patterns are not decoration. They are language. Each symbol carries meaning our ancestors understood—prayers for abundance, protection, harmony. My work is to keep that language alive, to speak it clearly enough that even someone who has never seen Rishtan can feel what it means."

Your purchase directly supports Usta Ravshan's workshop and helps preserve ceramic traditions that have flourished along the Silk Road for over 800 years.
