THE STORY
Gold on black—this is Ravshan working outside his usual language, proving mastery means knowing when to break your own rules.
While he's known for ishkor blue, this plate demonstrates his command of a technique more commonly associated with Bukhara: raised-dot scrollwork so dense it creates the illusion of metalwork rather than ceramic. Against a black ground, golden arabesques twist and overlap in concentric rings, each curve built from hundreds of individually placed dots. Turquoise and coral accents punctuate the darkness. At the center, a white daisy blooms simply—a moment of calm amid the intricacy.
The scalloped edge itself is a technical feat: each lobe outlined in cream dots, filled with coral scrollwork, then bordered again. One misplaced dot at this scale would disrupt the entire rhythm.
Look at the lower right quadrant: the golden scrolls show where Ravshan adjusted the dot density mid-composition, making that section slightly more luminous than the rest. Intentional or improvised—with work this complex, sometimes there's no difference.

For 35 years, Usta Ravshan has devoted his life to a single, perfect thing: the legendary ishkor glaze of Rishtan. In his workshop in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, he transforms local clay and natural minerals into the brilliant turquoise that has defined Central Asian ceramics for 800 years. Ravshan learned the craft from his father, who learned from his father—an unbroken chain of knowledge spanning generations. But he isn't just preserving the past; he's ensuring its future. In his workshop, he trains apprentices in techniques that must be learned through years of patient practice, not quick tutorials. What sets Ravshan apart is his range: geometric precision in radiating stars and mathematical tessellations, yet also romantic florals and paradise garden motifs. Each piece balances technical perfection with artistic expression—the mark of a true master.
